Not Sweet
When you are tired and come home
You let your gaze rest on her face
As shimm’ring dust floats through the dome
Or deer in snow leave a trace
Her eyes are soft and warm and fond
Like half closed lilies in a pond
They do not ask, they do not speak
But see that you are weak
Her eyes embrace your eyes to calm
Your hardened heart ’s becoming smooth
Snow melts and spring sprouts of her palm
The dome is there to soothe
You both know she’s not always so
Some wounds she heals she stroke before
But resting on her face you know
Love cannot softly glow
She is no woman of your dreams
But heroine of your dreamless sleep
Like those hot springs in ancient Greece
She is not sweet, but deep
